WHAT HAPPENED?

Following the incident with Luis D’az’s controversial goal against Tottenham, Southgate, who has selected England’s team for the forthcoming matches against Australia and Italy, was asked what he thought of VAR.

The England manager continued by saying he “doesn’t like it” and asserting that we should respect the judgments of the on-field match referees.

WHAT THEY SAID:

“My first experience of it… we’re still not sure if the Jesse Lingard goal that knocked us out of a semi-final was legit or not,” the England manager told Sky Sports.

“I do not enjoy it. Although I believe that we should just accept the conclusions of the referees, I am also aware that we are not going to return to a time when technology was not a factor in making decisions.

“I don’t believe there is a solution that will achieve that,” the author said. “It was never going to resolve every issue.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE:

Following their 2-1 defeat to Spurs, Liverpool is already advocating for a rematch, with Jürgen Klopp saying it is the only just outcome given the “unprecedented” nature of the error.

When asked about the event and how Liverpool would like to continue, Klopp responded, “Something like this never happened, so that is why I think a replay is the right thing to do.”

After a string of blistering displays throughout September, Tottenham Hotspur skipper Heung-min Son has been nominated for the EA Sports FC Premier League player of the Month award.

Heung-min Son seems to have matured since assuming the captain’s armband for Tottenham, and it is evident that he is thriving in his new position under Ange Postecoglou.

The Son of last season, who lacked self-assurance and physical preparedness, has long since vanished, and we appear to be witnessing the kind of form that enabled the South Korean star to share the Golden Boot title in the 2021–2022 campaign.

Particularly early in the current campaign, Son and new acquisition James Maddison have forged a thrilling relationship, and the two appear to be Spurs’ primary offensive outlet.

The 31-year-old now has six goals to his name this season (Transfermarkt), and appears to have earned the right to start in the centre forward role ahead of Richarlison, at least for the time being.

Son has also earned more than that. Son made the list of nominees for the EA Sports FC Premier League Player of the Month award.

Alongside the Spurs player are Mohamed Salah of Liverpool, Julian Alvarez of Manchester City, Ollie Watkins of Aston Villa, Jarrod Bowen of West Ham, and Pedro Neto of Wolves. The only defender to be nominated is Kieran Trippier, a former member of Tottenham.

Based on attacking returns alone, it is hard to look past Sonny for this one. His goals have helped us to some huge results over the last month, and his high-energy performances have been a joy to watch, too. Not only that, but he has stepped up massively as a leader and looks to be a real authority on the pitch now.
