Tottenham star told he’s ’10 times’ better than Liverpool defender Van Dijk – ‘he is extraordinary’
Tottenham Hotspur star Cristian Romero has been told that he is “10 times” better than Liverpool and Netherlands centre-back Virgil van Dijk.
Due to his stellar tenure at Liverpool, Van Dijk is recognized as one of the best center backs in Premier League history.
The Dutchman has recently helped Liverpool win the Premier League and the Champions League, but over the previous two seasons, he has gradually deteriorated.
Even that Van Dijk is not the same player he once was after an alleged “leg-breaking” challenge from Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in 2020 has been made.
Romero, meanwhile, has made an immediate impression for Tottenham since joining from Serie A team Atalanta in 2021.
Last year, the defense won the World Cup, and former Argentine midfielder Jorge Burruchaga believes that the player is already far superior to Van Dijk.
“They cite Van Dijk as the top defender in the world, they say. Burruchaga stated to Radio La Red that Romero was ten times more.
“The most effective defenders are not swift. And Cuti [Romero] moves quickly and with balance. He is exceptional.
Ange Postecoglou, Tottenham’s new manager, has them playing excellent football after being a surprise package at the beginning of this season. Romero believes the club will “achieve great things” under the direction of the former Celtic manager.
Romero told the Evening Standard, “He’s a coach that works perfectly for Tottenham, he’s brought a lot of new hope.”
“I think what he’s doing is amazing, albeit it might take some time. He is assembling an excellent group and cultivating a positive environment. Even though it’s just been a few months, the entire squad is in support of him. A coach who wants to take on responsibility is always a plus, and the team needed this fresh spirit.
“It’s not like someone new comes in and [suddenly] you’re winning. It’s a process. A process requires time and it’s not easy to win trophies, but that’s what the coach wants and that’s what we want.
“I believe that if the team keeps moving in this direction under this coach, we will accomplish great things.”
He continued, “[Postecoglou] asked us to be a family from day one. There are more than 25 players. I’m referring to the staff and the club; everyone, from the president to the newest player, must move in unison toward the same goal. The only way we can truly accomplish big things is via it.
“Our supporters performed admirably against Manchester United. We must thank them, but I sincerely hope they will stick by us even if things get difficult.
