Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton recently skipped OTAs, making it clear he wanted a new contract. This led some to wonder whether he would attend the mandatory minicamp.
During a Thursday appearance on the “DNVR Broncos” podcast, Sutton – who has two years remaining on a four-year, $60.8M deal – confirmed he will report for the start of minicamp on June 11 despite questions about his future with the team.
He also discussed how he wants to end the Broncos’ eight-year playoff drought, the second-longest active streak in the NFL.
“This has been an organization teams have feared and respected, and I think the past couple of years we haven’t been able to uphold that standard,” Sutton said. “We want to be in that realm where people say, ‘Is it going to be the Chiefs or Broncos that come out of [the AFC] West?'”
It looks like Denver, in its second season under head coach Sean Payton, is going into rebuilding mode. They cut quarterback Russell Wilson this summer and chose Oregon’s Bo Nix with the 12th overall pick. Sutton said he intends to get along with the 24-year-old passer right away.
“I’m looking forward to getting out on the field and working with him,” Sutton stated. “He has that leader mentality, that aura that he carries and walks with.”
Sutton tied for fourth in the league with 10 touchdown catches in 16 games during the previous campaign. The 28-year-old pass-catcher might be eligible for a new contract if he performs similarly with Nix. The former Pro Bowler’s market worth is estimated by Spotrac at $18.7 million for a three-year contract.
