Broncos throw Zach Wilson’s future into more doubt with contract decision
Zach Wilson’s time with the Broncos may not last too long.
Multiple reports state that the team denied Wilson’s rookie deal’s fifth-year option. As a result, Wilson, a former Jets first-round selection in 2021, may become a free agency following the 2024 campaign.
According to ESPN, the Broncos had until Thursday to decide whether to exercise Wilson’s fifth-year option, which would have guaranteed him $22.408 million for the 2025 campaign.
It will provide the former Jets draft pick, who had a difficult three seasons in the Big Apple throwing 23 touchdown passes and 25 interceptions with a 57 percent completion percentage, an opportunity to show himself in the upcoming season.
Though there will be other quarterbacks in the mix, he will get a fresh start in Denver
Wilson is joined on the roster by Jarrett Stidham and Ben DiNucci of Denver.
Bo Nix, an Oregon quarterback, was also selected by the Broncos on Thursday with the 12th overall pick; head coach Sean Payton has stated that all players will be given an opportunity to play.
According to ESPN, Payton stated, “They’re all going to compete.”
Payton had also expressed excitement about having Wilson in the fold for 2024.
“We were thrilled to have Zach join our team,” Payton remarked. “I believe I said that we intended to expand the (quarterback) room even in the owner’s meetings. We thought that was a great opportunity. Several experienced backup players signed contracts, but we still saw potential in a player who was the No. 2 choice in the draft just three years prior. We genuinely appreciate his qualities.
The Broncos are off to a fresh start with the addition of Wilson and Nix this summer. Russell Wilson was released and signed with the Steelers when things didn’t work out.
