‘Never responded’… £17m player admits he actually ignored Tottenham before eventually deciding to join
Timo Werner has revealed that he actually ignored Tottenham this winter – before eventually deciding to join Spurs.
The 27-year-old made the comments when speaking to Florian Plettenburg of Sky Germany.
So, what did Timo Werner say about ignoring Tottenham? Let’s take a look…
Timo Werner ignored Tottenham
Well, Spurs managed to sign the Germany international on loan from RB Leipzig for six months in January.
Ange Postecoglou has been impressed by Werner so far, calling the speedy forward a “quality player” after the recent 3-2 win over Brentford.
However, the deal almost never happened, as the German initially wanted to focus on RB Leipzig.
Werner told Plettenburg: “In the end, it happened very quickly. Two to three weeks earlier, Tottenham had already contacted me, but I never responded because I thought I could achieve something in Leipzig over the winter.
“The more the interest grew and the more often Tottenham contacted my agents, it became so interesting that in the end, I couldn’t say no anymore.”
Werner has since made four Premier League appearances for Spurs – failing to score, but providing two assists.
RB Leipzig expect Tottenham to buy Timo Werner
Spurs negotiated an option to buy Werner on a permanent basis for £17m at the end of the season.
It’s interesting to note that, according to BILD, RB Leipzig really anticipates Tottenham to activate this purchase option.
Based on Postecoglou’s complimentary remarks, it would appear that the Bundesliga team has received positive feedback regarding Werner from the residents of North London.
We think that £17 million is a great deal for a player with this level of experience and talent in the modern era, so maybe Tottenham will decide to sign him long-term this summer.
If not, Postecoglou appears to be planning to add another forward in order to improve his assault; Barcelona’s Raphinha, number 11, has been mentioned.
