Several Springboks are on the move, with a number of high-profile players securing lucrative deals at overseas clubs.
Understandably so, given their sustained success on the international stage.
Now, another Springbok has signed a contract with Irish giants Munster.
SPRINGBOKS HOOKER SIGNS FOR IRISH GIANTS
Irish powerhouse Munster have confirmed the acquisition of Springbok hooker Marnus van der Merwe from the Scarlets.
“Munster Rugby are have confirmed the signing of Springbok hooker Marnus van der Merwe on a two-year contract ahead of the 2026/27 season, subject to visa criteria,” the official statement read.
It has been a remarkable year for the 29-year-old Springbok hooker.
In less than 12 months, he earned his Springbok debut against Georgia and signed for one of Europe’s most prestigious clubs.
The move offers Van der Merwe the opportunity to compete in elite competitions such as the Champions Cup, where he will test himself against some of the best teams in Europe and the world.
MUNSTER EXCITED TO WELCOME VAN DER MERWE ON BOARD
Munster believe Van der Merwe will add significant value to their squad.
“We are delighted to have signed a player of Marnus’ calibre ahead of next season and he will add to the strength of our front row. He has been one of the best hookers in the URC over the past two years, resulting in a call up to the Springboks squad,” Munster Rugby General Manager Ian Costello said.
Furthermore, the Irish side believe he will fit seamlessly into their set-up.
“He is an physical, abrasive hooker, very strong in the set-piece, excellent over the ball, and now has demonstrated his ability to perform at international level. Marnus is passionate and extremely ambitious and has the qualities that will make him a really good fit to our playing group. We look forward to welcoming him to Munster this summer,” he added.
