West Brom have placed James Morrison in caretaker charge until a new manager is found. The Baggies made the decision to sack Tony Mowbray after their poor run of form. They will now be weighing up who to bring in next and they will be considering their options.
The Midlands are sat in 10th place in the Championship table after 44 games. They are six points off the play-offs with only two fixtures left to play. Next up is an away trip to Cardiff City before they face Luton Town at home on the final day.
West Brom decision to sack Tony Mowbray questioned
Former Aston Villa man Lee Hendrie, who now works as a pundit, believes West Brom should have stuck by Mowbray. He thinks the former Middlesbrough and Sunderland deserved more time to turn things around. Their 3-1 loss to Derby County on Easter Monday proved to be the final straw.
Hendrie has said, as per Football League World: “I personally think it was the wrong call, to be honest. Timing-wise, it’s still really tight for that last couple of play-off spots. Obviously with Sheffield United going to be in there, and Sunderland have clarified that they are going to be the two play-off teams in there already. I mean, listen, you can get a bounce factor from someone coming in, but they’re going to have to find someone quickly.
“That’s the thing, I look at that football club and I feel like it’s been stood still for quite some time now, a lot of older players there, it’s an older squad. I know that they’ve tried to bring players in, but I don’t think sacking Tony was the right call whatsoever. I just feel they’re going to bring someone else in that has to really give them that bounce factor straight away to get them into the play-offs and potentially into the Premier League.”
He added: “But, getting to the Premier League, they’ve got to spend an absolute fortune to rebuild the squad they have there because there’s so many older heads there. So, I just don’t get it, I really don’t. I’m very surprised and shocked that they got rid of Mowbray.”
Why was Tony Mowbray sacked by West Brom?
West Brom’s aim at the start of the campaign was to get into the top six. They managed to do it last year but were beaten at the semi-finals over two legs by eventual winners Southampton. The Baggies have fallen short this term and will have to make another push for the Premier League again next time around.
Carlos Corberan left The Hawthorns in December when Valencia came calling. The Spaniard has since done an impressive job in La Liga and is missed by his former club. Mowbray was brought in as his replacement but wasn’t able to get a tune of the players.
The 61-year-old is a vastly experienced operator in the Football League and is a popular man in the game. However, his return to West Brom just didn’t work out in the end. He won only five of his 17 outings at the helm and lost on eight occasions.
