Leeds United had expected Illan Meslier to leave this summer following the club’s relegation.

According to Phil Hay of the Athletic, Celta Vigo had shown interest in the 23-year-old player, albeit a formal transfer never took place.

Meslier experienced a significant decline in performance in the second half of the previous campaign as a series of miscues against teams like Bournemouth and Fulham put Leeds in dire straits for relegation.

Upon Sam Allardyce’s hiring, Meslier was benched in favor of Joel Robles with four games left in the season.

Given that other elite clubs, like Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, had previously been linked to Meslier, it had appeared as though his Leeds career would be doomed from the start.

However, following such a severe deterioration in form, those teams apparently lost interest in Meslier, with Celta Vigo being the sole team to express interest.

However, due to the current financial constraints in Spanish football, it is evident that Celta was unable to meet Leeds’ asking price.

Meslier is once again Leeds’ top choice, under manager Daniel Farke, despite the acquisition of Karl Darlow from Newcastle United.

He has so far appeared to be a much more confident presence in goal after keeping his first spotless performance since February on Saturday against Sheffield Wednesday.

Meslier appears to be a lot more confident, particularly on the ball, and hopefully he can now start to fulfil the early potential he showed when he first broke through at Leeds.
