A vital Sheffield Wednesday player, whose contract was set to expire on June 30, has decided to extend his stay with the team.

By the end of June, Sheffield Wednesday had a number of players without contracts, including several first-team players who had already left the team.

The likes of Cameron Dawson and Reece James have made the move to South Yorkshire neighbours Rotherham United, whilst Lee Gregory has moved to Mansfield Town.

Tyreeq Bakinson has recently signed for Wycombe Wanderers in League One, with the likes of George Byers still searching for a new club.

There’s been a lot of talk about Di’Shon Bernard and Josh Windass, who both became free agents after their Sheffield Wednesday contracts expired in June 30th.

Bernard is returning to the UK after representing Jamaica in Copa America whilst Windass was reportedly in talks with West Brom over a possible free transfer.

Now though, Windass has signed a new deal with Sheffield Wednesday.

Windass, 30, finished the 2023/24 season in fine form, scoring goals in each of Sheffield Wednesday’s final three games of the season.

His form in the final weeks of the campaign played a huge part in Sheffield Wednesday eventually achieving a 20th place finish in the Championship.

In 135 games for the Owls, Windass has 40 goals, following his 2020 arrival from Wigan Athletic.

Now, BBC reporter Rob Staton says that Windass has signed a new contract with Sheffield Wednesday, though the length of his new deal has not been revealed.

Getting Windass signed on for next season, and likely for at least another season after that, is huge for Sheffield Wednesday.

He showed his qualities and leadership skills in the final weeks of last season and if he can stay fit for the entirety of the 2024/25 campaign, then Danny Rohl may be hoping for Windass to push for a 15, 20 goals tally.

Expect the club to now turn their attentions to Bernard, and his future at the club.

He has suitors in the Championship and in Europe, but after seeing Windass pen a new deal, and seeing all the new signings arrive, it may show Bernard the ambition that the club has and tempt him into signing a new deal too.

That may be hopeful from Sheffield Wednesday’s perspective. But a new deal for Bernard would be like a new signing in itself.
