Jeremy Chinn, the current Washington Commanders’ safety, is betting a lot on the team’s success.  Chinn was a free agent before signing a $4.105 million one-year deal with the Commanders, but he turned down a huge deal with the Pittsburgh Steelers in favor of joining Washington. However, how will this pan out for both Chinn and the Washington Commanders?

Jeremy Chinn’s Future is with the Washington Commanders

The former Carolina Panthers defensive back recently joined The SiriusXMBlitz and revealed all about his offseason.

“I can’t remember if it was a multi-year deal, but I did get another offer. I think Pittsburgh was probably a little bit more money. But just the situation here with Dan Quinn and Joe Whitt and Jason Simmons and TD [Thomas Donatell], this is where I’m supposed to be man,” Chinn said on the radio program.

It sounds like Chinn turned down quite a lucrative deal with Pittsburgh to join Washington, and he’s betting his future on the team’s success. He chose the Washington Commanders due to Dann Quinn’s past success with hybrid defenders with the Dallas Cowboys. With the projection that he will be a key impact player this season for the Commanders, he will likely command (if you will excuse the pun) more money on a multi-year deal next season, perhaps even more than Pittsburgh was willing to offer him. His future rests with Dan Quinn and the rest of the Washington Commanders organization, and this may be the breakthrough he and the team need. 

Jeremy Chinn’s Performance and How the Commanders Will Benefit

Jeremy Chinn’s rookie campaign was really strong. In 2020, he finished second to Washington Commanders player Chase Young for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, with a total of 117 tackles. He tallied 107 more tackles to his total in his sophomore campaign. In addition, he became the first player in thirty years to score two defensive touchdowns in a row.

Over the course of his four-year career, Chinn has recorded two interceptions, 324 combined tackles, and 17 passes defended. Chinn played with the Carolina Panthers throughout his first four seasons. After suffering an injury during the previous season and seeing his position reduced, he entered free agency during the offseason. Chinn got off to a terrific start for the Carolina Panthers, but due to a switch from a hybrid linebacker role to a big nickel role in 2022 due to the departure of defensive pass coordinator Jason Simmons, his career was slightly derailed.

Still, he is among the highest-graded safeties by Relative Athletic Score. Analysts, such as former NFL Player Brian Baldinger believes Chinn has a lot of promise and anticipates “100+ tackles” from him this year. On the Washington Commanders roster, Chinn is anticipated to play a hybrid position, which he appears to do well at.

For some time now, Jeremy Chinn has been on the verge of becoming a “star.” Hopefully, he will play a significant role for the Washington Commanders this season and perhaps even help them win a few games along the way.
