Good News:Victor Matfield’s future with Japan as Eddie Jones adds ex-Springboks coach

Eddie Jones has refreshed his coaching staff ahead of the 2025 Pacific Nations Cup campaign, recruiting the assistance of a former Springboks coach.

Gary Gold, who was formerly the head coach of the USA for five years, returns to international rugby as he has been added to Jones’ backroom staff.

The 58-year-old has held positions around the globe, working with London Irish and Western Province before joining Peter de Villiers’ Springboks coaching team in 2008.

He would later have stints with Newcastle, Bath, Kobe Kobelco Steelers, the Sharks and Worcester Warriors before taking on the USA Eagles top job.

Most recently, Gold was one of Jake White’s assistant coaches at the Bulls before leaving the Pretoria-based franchise by mutual consent some 12 months ago

He now joins Jones‘ coaching ticket ahead of the Pacific Nations Cup which includes the likes of former All Black prop Owen Franks, ex-Bath coach Neal Hatley and ex-Highlanders’ fly-half Dan Bowden.

Former Japanese players Shoji Ito and Ippei Asada complete Jones’ coaching team for the upcoming tournament which will see Japan take on the likes of Canada and the USA in Pool B with Fiji, Tonga and Samoa in Pool A.

Matfield’s involvement

Last year, legendary Springboks lock Victor Matfield was confirmed as an advisor to Japan, lending his lineout expertise to the side.

While he was not included on the list of coaches for the upcoming tournament, Planet Rugby understands that Jones will still lean on his expertise.

Matfield will be in camp with the Japanese team for two weeks of the year but much like his contract from last year, he will still provide feedback and analysis when required.

The second-most capped Springboks player of all-time detailed his role in Jones’ coaching team in an interview with Rapport last year.

“I will fly to Japan twice to be involved in the Japanese camp there for two weeks before their Tests,” he said.

“I will also do weekly analysis of the opposition teams for Japan and forward plans.”

He added: “This position with Japan suits me perfectly because of business interests and home life, I will of course be available at any time to get involved with the Boks.

“This is an incredible opportunity for me to stay involved and stay relevant in the game. The game has moved on, and you have to keep up with the new way of doing things.”
