Birmingham City and Wrexham are coming up from League One with the intention of making a splash. BCFC and the Red Dragons are both well backed clubs with big plans for the future.

They have both spent well in their bid to rise to the Championship, but the Blues and the North Welsh outfit will not be resting on their laurels in a bid to come good on their ambitions for the coming years.

Ahead of the summer, one man linked with the promoted duo has been out of contract Swansea City star Harry Darling, and a fresh update has now emerged on his situation.

Wales Online states that Darling is set to make a decision over his Swans future imminently with Birmingham City and Wrexham among the clubs lurking.

The South Welsh side hold onto hope that the 25-year-old defender will pen new terms, but they acknowledge the likelihood that he will be entertaining other offers too. Confidence has dropped over the past week as plans for next season start to formulate, potentially offering encouragement for BCFC, Wrexham and any other interested parties.

Darling started out in the Cambridge United academy but first really made a name for himself at MK Dons. He would spent a year-and-a-half with the latter before earning his Championship chance with Swansea City.

His performances in South Wales will have caught the eyes of many, not just current admirers Birmingham City and Wrexham.

Darling has emerged as a standout defender at the level, able to impress in both a back four or back three. However, with his deal winding down, perhaps pastures new await with higher financial terms likely on offer elsewhere.

Pros and cons of a Birmingham City move

Aforementioned financial terms will be an undoubted benefit of a move to Birmingham City. The Blues have ambitious plans to journey towards the higher reaches of the English game and they will be able to attract big assets like Darling as such.

However, there will be competition for Darling in the BCFC defence and there is no guarantee he would start. Christoph Klarer starred in League One and will likely retain his place.

Ben Davies is wanted back from Rangers after his impressive loan, while Phil Neumann is coming in on a pre-contract. Even then, Kristin Bielik remains on the books as a fine option.

As such, while City can put together a very appealing offer, Darling may find the more prevalent role he deserves elsewhere.
