Eoghan O’Connell says player released by Wrexham is ‘incredible’, his ‘influence’ was huge

Wrexham have released a number of players this week, one of whom has been highly praised by Eoghan O’Connell.

The Red Dragons’ season ended on a high, securing their third promotion in a row to book their place in the Championship.

With another step up in level, however, difficult decisions on the future of several Wrexham players have now been made.

Mark Howard announced his exit on Thursday, suggesting it was his call to leave the club on a free.

Later that day, Steven Fletcher left Wrexham but, unlike Howard, said leaving is ‘not by choice’.

It was then confirmed on Friday afternoon that eight senior players will leave the Welsh outfit when their deals expire on June 30, and Eoghan O’Connell has praised one of them highly.

Fletcher scored eight League One goals in 2024/25, making him the club’s second-top goalscorer in all competitions behind Elliot Lee.

The Scotsman was crucial to promotion, and his Wrexham exit has upset some fans.

Now, comments from O’Connell have emerged, as per Leader Live, which highlight Fletcher’s influence and how players felt about him.

He said: “Fletch is incredible. The influence he’s had on the whole team since he came here has been brilliant.

“The way he is off the pitch and the way he is with the lads, he’s so popular in the dressing room and everyone loves him and his performances speak for themselves.

“It could have been easy for someone like him to come here, getting to the end of his career, and just fob it off but he’s been brilliant and a brilliant person as well.

“I said to the lads when we signed him that you should feel lucky to play with him, and I think everyone does, so we’re all very glad to have him here.”

Fletcher was perhaps the biggest name to be released by the club, though several previously important players have also left.

Sam Dalby turned down a new contract to depart after hitting 14 goals while on loan at Dundee United this season.

Josh Adam, Brad Foster, and Liam Hall all had options for an extra year, which the club did not take up.
