Wrexham failed to even have a shot in target in a fairly disappointing encounter at the Brick Community Stadium.

Wycombe Wanderers went and beat Stevenage 1-0, meaning the Chairboys have cut Wrexham’s lead in second place to just one point.

There were always going to be twists and turns in this promotion race, but Wrexham must now hit back with four games to play.

EFL chief executive on Wrexham promotion chance

Wrexham could put themselves in the history books by landing a third straight promotion.

Going from the National League to League One with back-to-back promotions was incredible enough, but a third in a row would be astonishing.

Yes, rival fans will point to great backing from Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds, but money doesn’t always buy success – just look at Manchester United over the last 12 years.

Wrexham have been getting it right ever since McElhenney and Reynolds’ £2million takeover, and EFL chief executive Trevor Birch has now commented on the prospect of Wrexham going up once again.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Birch admitted that another promotion would be a ‘great achievement’ for Wrexham.

Birch also touched on the ‘exposure’ provided by McElhenney and Reynolds, believing that they are great for the EFL as well as for Wrexham.

Birch acknowledges that McElhenney and Reynolds are ‘big news’ in America but believes that their impact raises the interest level in the whole of the EFL, not just Wrexham.

“It would be a great achievement and, listen, it’s great, the exposure they’re getting,” said Birch.

“I think it’s great for the EFL as well, obviously, they’re big news back in the US, and it can only be a positive thing for the EFL,” he added.

American events sum up Wrexham influence

Imagine being told just 10 years ago that fans in the United States would flock to a venue where they could watch Wrexham games as if they were inside the STōK Cae Ras.

That would have sounded completely bonkers, but that has been happening this season.

Cosm in Los Angeles showed games against Barnsley and Birmingham City on an immersive screen.

That just goes to show the pulling power Wrexham have, with McElhenney and Reynolds effectively putting League One football on the map in the United States.

Championship action may already have some following there, but Wrexham may well bump up the viewing figures in the United States if promotion can be secured this season.
