There is an admiration for South African rugby’s passion and widespread envy of its support at both national and club level, writes MARK KEOHANE.
Writing for TimesLIVE, Keohane argues that the Springboks’ dominance, combined with a booming sponsorship market, reflects the country’s status as a global powerhouse.
He notes that SA rugby has been warmly embraced in Europe, with EPCR leaders praising its impact. The Investec Champions Cup and EPCR Challenge Cup have benefited from South Africa’s presence, and discussions are ongoing about hosting future finals in the Republic.
Keohane highlights that the Vodacom URC’s first three seasons have seen South African teams thrive, hosting all finals and the Stormers winning the inaugural title in an all-SA decider.
“These are the weeks when you know the Springboks are world champions and South African rugby is at an all-time high,” he writes. “These are the weeks made for the world’s best.
“No, the Springboks have not started their international season of 15 Tests and one exhibition match against the famed Barbarians.
“And no, South Africa have not been crowned champions of the north and south in any club competition in the past week.
“The sponsorships have financially increased 10-fold in the past eight years, such has been the pulling power of a transformed World Cup winning Springboks and an administration that is getting so much right.
“Nationally, the game is purring … There is awe for the passion of the game in South Africa and there is joyous envy for the support the game gets in South Africa.”
