The former Saracens and Leicester Tigers hooker played 262 Premiership Games and played 27 times for England including the 2007 RWC Final.

15 Geordan Murphy: “There’s nobody I would trust more at the back than ‘George’. A rock, a genius in attack and a thoroughly funny person. His bromance sharing a flat with Lewis Moody was an ever-enduring feature of Tiger’s culture and I’ll never forget the day when Lewis announced that his and Geordie had been written to and complemented by the Gas Board; “They said our bill is ‘outstanding’…” was the remarkable comment. And they were serious!”

14 Alesana Tuilagi: “Massive. Mean. Brooding. Forwards in training avoided him, backs in matches would feign injury rather than have to face him on the wing. Could play in the back-row if you needed him. Plus he slapped Moody in a Test match, so he gets in on that basis alone.”

13 Jeremy Guscott: “Those who question his defence are clueless about the Bath culture of the time. Miss a tackle on John Hall and Nigel Redman’s watch and you were toast. But in attack, a magician.”

12 Brian O’Driscoll: “Yes, I have been naughty in playing two outside centres but sometimes you have to live life in the fast lane. And as a rugby player, that’s what Drico did. He was peerless both sides of the ball and he and Jerry together would have terrified opponents.”

11 Joe Rokocoko: “Such a balanced runner. I played against him at Test level and I well recall the colours of the soles of his boots- as that’s pretty much the closest I got to him! A magnificent attacker and a top man.”

10 Dan Carter: “Given I played with Wilko in possibly his best performance for England (France, Rugby World Cup 2007 Semi Final) to elevate DC above him should tell you the impression he made upon me. The master game controller, the best.”

9 George Gregan: “Came up with the most brutal sledge in the history of rugby, I reckon, when he slammed the All Blacks with ‘four more years, boys’ as Australia dumped them out of the World Cup. But a player that had all the tools and was lethal around the fringes.”

8 Ben Clarke: “We need a chair of the entertainment committee and Big Ben is the perfect man. He’s also a hugely underrated player who could play across the back-row and was a standout for the Lions in NZ in 1993 playing on the flank.”

7 Richie McCaw: “Sometimes, he got in places you didn’t know existed. I reckon he played in a Romulan Cloaking device, such was his ability to ghost into killer plays. The best seven I have ever seen, let alone played against!”

6 Richard Hill: “The first name I wrote down, the best player I have ever played with and the most relentless man I’ve ever seen on a rugby pitch. His attention to detail was ridiculous and he had it all. People forget his early days as an openside when he had gas to burn. An all-time great of the game, in my eyes.”

5 Victor Matfield: “I need to ensure that if I come on off the bench in my dream XV that I have someone that makes my throwing look good. And Matfield is the King of Lineouts. He wasn’t given enough credit for his wide carrying either, where he’d pop up like an extra flanker.”

4 Martin Johnson: “If I didn’t pick him, I suspect he’d find me and damage me. Playing with him was inspirational. And underneath that mono-brow, he had a wicked and quite childish sense of humour. An all-time great of quiz leagues too!”

3 Martin Castrogiovanni: “Larger than life, brilliant around the pitch, and a rock in the scrum. Although his hair could get everywhere in the front row! A Tigers legend and a man who stood beside me many times.”

2 Keith Wood: “Mad as a jumping bean, hard as nails and a formidable scrummager. And he never shut up in scrums. But someone I respect hugely as a hooker, a player and all-round man of rugby. His shoulders were in bits towards the end but he still kept coming at you.”

1 Marcos Ayerza: “When the likes of Adam Jones, Phil Vickery and Carl Hayman all say Marcos was the best they faced, it endorses his brilliance. He was the ultimate technician, but as strong as an ox, and had a pretty big head that he’d get under the tighthead’s breastbone. Scrummaging with him was an armchair ride. The best.”
