Ipswich Town column: It’s time to see something different
I am struggling with the way Ipswich Town have capitulated at times this season. I get the league is tough, but for me conceding three goals in six minutes is inexcusable, whatever the division.
Yes, it’s the Premier League where every mistake is seemingly punished, but Kieran McKenna’s men should’ve responded better to goals two and three Nottingham Forest scored on Saturday and that’s where my disappointment lies.
It’s the same old story. ‘In it’ to an extent, then blink and it’s 3-0.
I remember sitting there as the clock hit 33 minutes, thinking if we can just get to half-time we may go on to get something here. Obviously we didn’t and I couldn’t blame those booing when the half-time whistle blew.
I get this league was always going to be tough, but I can’t help feel we should be putting up more of a fight, especially given the money spent.
Nine games to go. It feels like a lot. I thought Town were probably down once we’d lost to Southampton, and Saturday’s results pretty much confirm it now.
Maybe it’s too early for an end-of-season review, but it does feel like one filled with too many ‘could’ve, should’ve, would’ve’ moments.
What if we’d held on against Leicester? What if Aro Muric hadn’t rushed out against Bournemouth?
We’ve sadly fallen short in most of the close calls or tight games and that’s something to learn from for next time.
For now, I’m desperate to see something a little different. Whether that’s the system or personnel, I’m just begging for some kind of change to these performances, which hopefully may spark results.
Town will be in a strong position to bounce back up and let’s be honest, the current quality of the Championship is a lot weaker than it was when we were last there.
I do think a decent end to this campaign is vital in that though. If we’re going to go down, we need to take some kind of positivity with us.
