Denmark manager Brian Riemer insists a breakdown in communication between Patrick Dorgu and Andre Onana was what contributed to Ipswich Town’s opening goal against Manchester United at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Ipswich made a flying start to the game in M16, taking the lead after just four minutes when Jaden Philogene pounced on a mix up between Onana and Dorgu.

The Dane brought down a long ball on the edge of his own penalty area and intended to knock it back towards Onana, only to see the Cameroonian had already come scampering out of his goal to try and meet it himself.

Dorgu’s pass went straight past the United goalkeeper, who ended up on the turf, and Philoegene had the simple task of stroking the ball into an empty net.

It was a nightmare moment for the duo, with neither of them covering themselves in glory. Dorgu’s evening later got worse, of course, when he was sent-off shortly before half-time.

And in the opinion of Denmark chief Riemer, communication issues between Dorgu and Onana were to blame, attempting to reassure him that it was nothing more than an innocent mistake.

“I feel for the boy,” said Riemer, as quoted by Camp.dk. “Everyone knows it’s not nice to be in a situation like that.

“But from the coaching side of the table, it’s worse if tactical decisions and individual skills are not good enough. From a coaching perspective, I can reassure him by saying it’s a real misunderstanding.

“It’s a communication error at some level, and of course it shouldn’t happen, but I think all defenders have experienced that.”
