As the dust settles on Celtic’s Champions League draw with Club Brugge, there will be an air of disappointment amongst the fans that all three points didn’t stay in Glasgow.

After the Celtic Park win over RB Leipzig earlier this month, Brendan Rodgers put the Bhoys in a great position to qualify from the league phase and confidence was high amongst the fans that another win was on the cards against the Belgians.

But the Belgian Pro League side had other ideas. Brugge had their own dangermen Celtic had to keep their eye on and that proved to be the case last night.

Brugge proved to be no pushovers as they pressed and squeezed the Hoops into making a mistake after Cameron Carter-Vickers’ passed the ball into the Celtic net to open the scoring for the Belgian side.

Celtic did find their equaliser after Daizen Maeda’s superb curling shot levelled the scores but in the end, they just couldn’t find another goal in them as they shared the points with their Champions League opponents.

Reacting to the result, Chris Sutton praised Maeda for the goal that earned Celtic a ‘valuable’ point in the UEFA tournament.

Brugge surprised many with their style of play and played well against the Scottish champions. However, Celtic showed tremendous character, just like they did against Leipzig, to fight back and earn a point against an opponent that many fans may have underestimated.

Diazen Maeda’s Champions League impact for Celtic under Brendan Rodgers

Whatever the Celtic manager has done to Maeda, let’s hope it keeps going this season with three fixtures left to play.

Last night was the Japanese winger’s third goal of the tournament, after he scored his first in Celtic’s win over Slovan Bratislava in the opening group game of the season.

Maeda then followed that goal up with an equaliser in the Hoops’ 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund as the Japan international proves he can mix it with Europe’s elite.

Hopefully, Maeda can keep up his goalscoring form because with Celtic still on course to reach the play-off places, Brendan Rodgers will need his winger’s goals to help continue their superb European form.
