At 5-2, the Green Bay Packers are in prime position for a run at a second-consecutive postseason appearance. Given the noteworthy changes that the roster has gone through over the past few years, one must admit that their success last season, as well as their early success in 2024, is nothing short of incredible.
Of course, the changing of the guard from Aaron Rodgers to Jordan Love at quarterback was the most important and drastic transition. However, a year prior to Rodgers leaving, Green Bay went through a different massive change at wide receiver.
Following the 2021 season, Davante Adams was traded to the Las Vegas Raiders. Additionally, Marquez Valdes-Scantling (MVS) was allowed to depart via free agency. He signed a four-year deal with the Kansas City Chiefs and won two Super Bowl rings as a result.
Now, both Adams and MVS are on entirely different NFL teams.
As many fans predicted, Adams was traded to the New York Jets to reunite with Rodgers. Their first game back together ended in a 37-15 loss, with the three-time All-Pro catching just three passes for 30 yards.
MVS was released by the Chiefs following their second consecutive Super Bowl win. He signed with the Buffalo Bills in free agency, but it quickly became apparent that he did not fit with their offense. On the season, MVS has just two receptions for 26 yards.
On the same day that Adams was traded to the Jets, the Bills acquired Amari Cooper in a trade with the Cleveland Browns. To make room for him on the roster, they released the former Packers wide receiver.
Despite numerous teams being interested in his services, MVS has chosen to sign with the New Orleans Saints:
The addition of Valdes-Scantling makes sense for New Orleans, who recently lost wide receiver Rashid Shaheed to a season-ending knee injury. They also currently are starting rookie Spencer Rattler at quarterback while Derek Carr, Adams’ former teammate with the Raiders, recovers from an oblique injury.
The Saints have lost five games in a row and take on the Los Angeles Chargers on Sunday.
