South African cricket legend Allan Donald, known for his fiery pace and relentless attitude on the field, is now embarking on a new chapter with Durban’s Super Giants (DSG) in the forthcoming SA20 season. With the SA20 season set to kick off in early January, Allan Donald is quite curious to see what lies ahead for Durban’s Super Giants. His presence would add a great deal of firepower to the team going forward.

Meanwhile, in an exclusive interview with Mykhel, Proteas’ bowling great Allan Donald shared his excitement about joining the franchise, his pride in South African cricket, and his plans for the future before showering praise on West Indies’ pace bowling sensation Shamar Joseph. The 57-year-old also discussed the team’s strategy in assembling a strong bowling lineup for the upcoming season. Reflecting on the DSG’s discussions, Donald opened up on how they initially targeted English pacer Richard Gleeson but had to quickly pivot when they actually missed out on signing him. “We were sitting around the table this evening and we were looking at getting Richard Gleeson. He’s very good at what he does in this format of the game. We lost out, and we quickly had to go again,” Allan Donald, who took 602 wickets in international cricket, added.
When faced with options, the team considered various players to strengthen their bowling attack, and ultimately, the decision was made to bring in a young, exciting prospect. “Should we go for Josh Little? So we go for Shamar Joseph? So eventually it came down to the youngster. So for us, it was easy because we needed two overseas fast bowlers because you have to have enough in your arsenal,” Donald added in a statement. Allan Donald heaps praise on Shamar Joseph Furthermore, the Bloemfontein-born cricketer reserved the highest respect for Shamar Joseph for single-handedly turning the match in West Indies’ favour in their famous Test win over Australia at the Gabba in late January, which the Caribbeans won by 8 runs. Shamar Joseph was adjudged the Man of the Match for his scintillating bowling spell (7/68) in the second innings. “He’s a very exciting youngster. I saw him a couple of years ago when he won a Test match off the back of his own bowling against Australia, and he was just fantastic. So, to work with him, he’s a good kid,” the White Lightning echoed.
Reflecting on South Africa’s premier T20 tournament, he expressed immense pride in the success of the first edition, before adding that it is one of the proudest days to be a South African. “I said to Graeme (Smith) after the first edition at Boland Park, this is one of the proudest days to be a South African, and seeing what is happening here and seeing the stadiums makes you incredibly proud in terms of what it does for young kids. And that’s the first thing I noticed, how many young people came through those gates, passionate about the Royals, passionate about Durban’s Supergiants. So to be involved in this now, and now to be a part of it,” the former Proteas’ paceman said. Joining DSG is more than just a job for Allan because it is a homecoming. Being part of the franchise means reuniting with former South African teammates, namely Jonty Rhodes and Lance Klusener. “To be part of the Supergiants, it’s just a wonderful feeling and also joining up with two ex-teammates, Jonty and Lance, will be an even bigger thing. So, yeah, look, I’m extremely privileged to be part of it and I look forward to what lies ahead come January,” he concluded.
