Lee Trundle’s social media post about Wrexham’s promotion to the Championship has gone viral as he aimed a brutal dig.
Wrexham beat Charlton Athletic 3-0 on Saturday to secure their third successive promotion, sealing a spot in next season’s Championship campaign.
The club’s Hollywood co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney were in attendance at the Racecourse Ground as they delivered a ‘mic drop’ interview.
There were jubilant scenes in Wrexham following their promotion but the same cannot be said in South Wales as Cardiff City dropped out of the Championship following their goalless draw against West Brom.
The Bluebirds will play in the third tier of English football for the first time in 22 years next season after their relegation was confirmed.
But Wrexham will join Swansea City in next season’s Championship, with Trundle making his feelings clear on the Red Dragons’ latest promotion.
In doing so, the Swansea legend, who also played for Bristol City, aimed a savage dig at Cardiff.
On X, Trundle wrote: “Congratulations to Wrexham on getting promoted today. Great to see two Welsh teams in the championship.”
Trundle was clearly poking fun at Cardiff’s despair considering his ties with Swansea and Bristol City.
What Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney said after Wrexham’s promotion to the Championship
Reynolds and McElhenney spoke to Sky Sports following Wrexham’s achievement.
Reynolds said: “There are so many people here that don’t get the credit they deserve. People are here every day, the stewards, the supporters, the media team, the coaches, everyone keeping the players safe. People who are not talked about, not sung about but actually keep the entire thing going and we have so much love for them.”
McElhenney added: “It seemed like an impossible dream. The greatest dressing room in sports, in any category, I’ve ever seen before. Truly folks I’ve seen who are all for one and one for all. This community, I’m speechless with their passion and emotion.”
What Aaron Ramsey said after Cardiff’s relegation from the Championship
Ramsey, who was put in caretaker charge following the sacking of Omer Riza, expressed his sadness at Cardiff being relegated.
“I’m gutted. I’m a fan as well and sad to see this club going down,” he said.
“The fans have had a difficult time this season and I really feel for them. I know how they’re feeling.
“But also, I want to say I’m proud of the last couple of performances. The level of effort the players have put in and the information they’ve taken on was evident.”

The Swansea City and Wrexham legend is still bagging goals in 2025.
Football fans were shocked to see that EFL legend Lee Trundle is still playing professional football, and he’s still scoring bangers.
Having played for 20 different clubs across England and Wales, Trundle has established himself as a legend of the EFL, scoring some world class goals throughout his 30 year career.
The most prolific and well-known spell of Trundle’s career was his time at Swansea City, scoring 92 goals and assisting 29 in 199 appearances for the Welsh side.
He went on to play for several other household names in the EFL, including Bristol City and Leeds United, but some fans were shocked to hear that at 48 years old, Trundle is still playing professional football.
Unsurprisingly given his age, Trundle has spent recent years playing for clubs at the bottom of the football pyramid in the United Kingdom.
He is currently playing for Trefelin Boys & Girls Club, a Welsh club currently competing in the Cymru South league, and has impressively made 33 appearances across all competitions, scoring 21 goals and assisting six.

And in his latest game in the domestic league, he reminded some fans that, despite clearly being in the twilight years of his career, he still maintains his incredible goal scoring ability.

Reacting to the goal, one fan wrote: “Absolutely blessed to have witnessed talent like this at Swansea and still banging in screamers. Absolute pleasure.”
Another simply added: “What a Strike. What a Man. What a Club.”
While one wrote: “What a finish! The man will never stop!”

And another fan poetically claimed: “Grass is green. Water is wet. Lee Trundle scoring worldies. Still going strong at the age of 48 for Trefelin. They don’t make them like magic daps anymore!”
Just last month, Trundle’s impressive season with Trefelin saw him win the JD Cymru South player of the month award, and he’s showing no signs of slowing down!

James McClean aims brutal dig at Birmingham fans on social media as Wrexham star rattles entire fanbase
Wrexham’s McClean clashed with opposing players and fans in Monday’s defeat at Birmingham.
James McClean has come out swinging on social media after being slammed for his actions in Wrexham’s defeat to Birmingham City.
No stranger to controversy, McClean was involved in several fiery moments in Monday’s League One clash at St Andrew’s – which ended in a 3-1 win for the home side.
McClean was subjected to abuse from the crowd throughout the match and tempers boiled over towards the end of the game when Wrexham striker Paul Mullin was involved in an incident with Birmingham’s Alex Cochrane.
Mullin appeared to attempt to bite Cochrane before pulling out at the final moment. That sparked a brawl between the two sets of players, with McClean at the centre of the fracas.
The former Republic of Ireland international was taken off with around seven minutes remaining in normal time and was seen goading the home fans while walking down the side of the pitch, after receiving another volley of verbal abuse.
At one point, a Birmingham supporter threw a cup of beer at McClean, who caught it and pretended to drink before throwing it away – gesturing to the home fans in the process.
As reported by the Belfast Telegraph, he also lifted his left short leg to show a tattoo while walking off the pitch – slapping his thigh to draw attention to the design which represents Free Derry Corner in the city of his birth.
McClean has since taken to social media to defend his actions, while aiming insults at Birmingham supporters.
Posting a picture to Instagram of himself pretending the drink the pint, McClean wrote: “They have nothing in their whole imperial arsenal that can break the spirit of an Irishman who doesn’t want to be broken” – a reported quote of IRA hunger striker Bobby Sands, who died while imprisoned at HM Prison Maze in Northern Ireland in 1981 during The Troubles.
McClean added: “Fair play to the one old steward that held them all back from getting over the 2ft advertising hoardings.”
The winger later posted a second picture of himself catching the cup, which featured a Birmingham fan in the background.
He added the caption: “In fairness to this smelly fat gammon, he probs didn’t have the energy or mobility to step over the hoarding.”
McClean has been subjected to abuse from fans in England ever since he refusing to wear a poppy on his shirt following his arrival in English football with Sunderland in 2011.
He has also been known to make his own controversial comments, previously joking about giving his children a lesson on Irish history while wearing an IRA-style balaclava, which resulted in him being fined two weeks wages by Stoke City – his club at the time.
In 2022, he accused the FA of failing to act on the “sickening” abuse he and his family had faced since arriving in England.
“Everyone who attended the game would have heard this loud and clear including the referee, match officials and other officials,” he wrote on social media, following a match for Wigan against his former club Sunderland.
“I should not have to report every single incident when clearly they can all hear what I hear and they should be doing their job by taking action.”
