Aloy Named Finalist for Dick Howser Trophy

DALLAS – Arkansas’ Wehiwa Aloy has been named a finalist for the 2025 Dick Howser Trophy.

Given in memory of the former Florida State All-America shortstop and major league player and manager who died of brain cancer in 1987, the Dick Howser Trophy is regarded by many as college baseball’s Heisman Trophy. Criteria for consideration of the trophy include performance on the field, leadership, moral character and courage.

Aloy, the Razorbacks’ superstar shortstop, is one of four finalists, including UCLA’s Roch Cholowsky, Tennessee’s Liam Doyle, and Florida State’s Alex Lodise, for this year’s award. The 38th Dick Howser Trophy will be presented at a national news conference at 10 a.m. Friday, June 13, at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Neb.

Aloy, the 2025 SEC Player of the Year, is slashing a team-leading .355/.440/.686 with 20 home runs, tied for fourth most in program history, and 64 RBI through 59 games this season. The junior, who has started every game this year, is on his way to turning in one of the best offensive campaigns in program history, leading the team in nearly every major category, including batting average (.355), slugging percentage (.686), on-base plus slugging (1.126), runs scored (77), hits (86), doubles (18), home runs (20), extra-base hits (39) and total bases (166).

Named a finalist for the Golden Spikes Award and Brooks Wallace Award, Aloy has dazzled defensively with just five errors in 205 total chances (.976 fielding percentage) while helping turn 28 double plays this season. The Wailuku, Hawai’i, native is the second Razorback finalist for the trophy in as many seasons, joining pitcher Hagen Smith (2024).

Aloy would be the third Razorback in program history to win the Dick Howser Trophy, joining outfielder Andrew Benintendi (2015) and pitcher Kevin Kopps (2021). Arkansas is one of seven schools, including Texas (4), Clemson (3), Florida (2), Florida State (2), Georgia Tech (2) and LSU (2), to claim multiple Dick Howser Trophy winners.

The Golden Spikes Award, considered the most prestigious among college baseball’s national player of the year honors, recognizes the top amateur baseball player in the United States based on their athletic ability, sportsmanship, character and overall contribution to the sport. Aloy is one of three finalists, including Tennessee’s Liam Doyle and Florida State’s Alex Lodise, for this year’s award, and the third Hog to be named a Golden Spikes Award finalist in the last five years.

The junior from Wailuku, Hawai’i, is the fifth Razorback finalist since the Golden Spikes Award’s inception and would be the third winner in program history behind outfielder Andrew Benintendi (2015) and pitcher Kevin Kopps (2021).

Aloy is the fourth Razorback finalist in the Dave Van Horn era, including Benintendi (2015), Kopps (2021) and pitcher Hagen Smith (2024). Arkansas, the only program with multiple Golden Spikes Award winners since 2015 as well as the only program with three finalists since 2021, is one of six schools, including Florida State (4), Arizona State (3), Cal State Fullerton (3), LSU (2) and San Diego State (2), with multiple Golden Spikes Award winners in its program history.

The 47th Golden Spikes Award will be presented Saturday, June 21, on ESPN at 6:30 p.m. ET/5:30 p.m. CT prior to first pitch of Game 1 of the Men’s College World Series finals. The 2025 Golden Spikes Award timeline is as follows:

• June 4: Golden Spikes Award finalists announced, and fan voting begins
• June 20: Golden Spikes Award finalists fan voting ends
• June 21: Golden Spikes Award winner announced

A final ballot will be sent to the Golden Spikes Award voting body consisting of national baseball media, select professional baseball personnel and USA Baseball staff, and the previous winners of the award, totaling a group of more than 100 voters. From Wednesday, June 4, to Thursday, June 12, the voting body will cast their final vote for the Golden Spikes Award winner and fan voting will simultaneously be open on GoldenSpikesAward.com.
