Celtic finally got the ball rolling on their summer transfer business by acquiring two new goalkeepers last week.

Kasper Schmeichel and Viljami Sinisalo arrived to refresh Brendan Rodgers’ options in goal following Joe Hart’s retirement.

However, there’s lots more work to do on the recruitment front with multiple positions across the team needing strengthening before the end of the current summer window.

Rodgers has been discussing the ongoing hunt for new players and it appears a new key priority has emerged after solving the goalkeeping issue.

The manager is clear about his need for two quality strikers as well as a third option that can be developed over time.

The Bhoys boss from the USA tour [Daily Record] said: “I’m really hopeful every day. We know we need to improve the squad. We want to develop. But in the meantime, whilst we await that, you can see the players that are here are developing well, working well and they’re playing some fantastic football at this pre-season stage.

“I think my ideal scenario was to have three strikers, was to have Kyogo, one other one and bring through a young player. That was the role we came up for at Rocco.

It’s very difficult for a club of this size to have three number one strikers. You can live with two because we play so many games and the specific nature of the games then we can change it about. Three is very difficult. But I also think for development I want to bring some young, maybe a player from within.

“Rocco was that but he’s moved on. So we may have to look elsewhere. But three is a really good number. Two, I would say to be number one strikers, and one that we can nurture and develop.”

This is a good squad-building philosophy we’re hearing from Rodgers. Clearly, at the moment, there’s a weakness in the striking position but by the end of the window there should be three options available for the rest of the season.

Celtic undoubtedly need two ‘first-choice’ strikers. That’s not a contradiction, it’s just a reality of the club’s busy schedule, fixture demands and Rodgers’ preferred way of rotating players.

We saw that system work well in the second half of last season with Adam Idah’s arrival, who successfully worked in support of Kyogo and vice versa.

Whether it’s Idah or another, Celtic need someone who can perform as effectively as the Japanese star in the position, alongside that rougher potential gem as the third choice.
