Sunderland enquire about Tottenham Hotspur man who’s expected to leave

Sunderland are looking to bolster their attacking options ahead of the new Championship campaign.

Regis Le Bris’ side have been subject to bids from around Europe, with the likes of Trai Hume gaining admiration from Turkish side Galatasaray, with a £7million bid rejected for the defender.

However, the uncertainty of current players has not faulted Sunderland’s attempts to add attacking talent to their side ahead of the 2024/25 Championship season.

Kristjaan Speakman has already spoken on the necessity of bringing in a goalscorer before the end of the transfer window, especially with options looking very scarce at this moment.

Current attacking Sunderland players include the likes of Nazariy Rusyn and Luis Hemir, however both struggled to adapt to Championship level after joining the club last season.

Sunderland have targeted Caen striker Alexandre Mendy as an option, however his bid was rejected by the French side, creating a very clear verdict on the ongoing striker hunt from Michael Graham.

Sunderland not approaching striker pursuit ‘particularly well’ after Alexandre Mendy bid rejected

Sunderland offered a reported fee of just below €1million (£0.84million) for Mendy, with the striker keen on a move away from Caen.

MORE SUNDERLAND STORIES

After Mendy’s bid was knocked back by the Ligue 2 outfit, Michael Graham took to X to issue a damning verdict on Sunderland’s ongoing striker pursuit.

Per X, Michael Graham said: “Well the good news is that Sunderland are making a lot of moves for strikers.

“The bad news is that, at the moment, they don’t seem to be making them particularly well.”

Sunderland have still made just the two signings this summer, with goalkeeper Simon Moore and mdfielder Alan Browne being the only individuals to come through the doors at the Stadium of Light.

Sunderland must persevere in their striker hunt despite set-backs

With Sunderland’s current attacking options not quite giving the assurance of goal scoring ability, Speakman must prioritise getting striking additions through the doors.

Bellingham was able to make an impact for the Black Cats in the 2023/24 Championship season at striker, however he was prevented from playing to his strengths that could have been utilised in midfield.

Sunderland have the financial freedom to not be too frugal when it comes to signing a goalscorer, meaning that options will be out there ahead of the 2024/25 Championship season.

Mendy is a perfect option for Sunderland to bring in with his proven track record of scoring, and one that won’t be too expensive to bring to Wearside.

Even if Sunderland do end up slightly over-paying, it will be crucial for Le Bris’ plans to get a striker in now, and Speakman should look to get a deal done for the French striker as soon as possible in order to end the Sunderland striker fiasco once and for all.
