A scrimmage between current Kentucky roster and TBT squad could be in the works
Mark Pope and others are suggesting that there could be a nice matchup between the current Kentucky roster and the ‘La Familia’ TBT team.
Is it possible for the Kentucky roster to play UK alumni in their first summer test? There is undoubtedly a lot of discussion about it.
Over the next several weeks, Rupp Arena will host a regional, and TBT is rapidly approaching, so Kentucky’s alumni squad will be back in town. So, is there a chance we could watch both teams play each other?
The two teams are anticipated to scrimmage, as stated in a report by the Lexington Herald-Leader.
The Harrison twins are the main players on the team; additional players include James Young, Reid Travis, Doron Lamb, Daniel Orton, Eric Bledsoe Marquis Teague, Kellan Grady, and Willie Cauley-Stein.
“It’s going to be a huge deal,” Kentucky head coach Mark Pope said last week. “We’re going to take every opportunity to support these greats. We have three national champions that are coming back to be a part of this team and a bunch of guys that went far in the NCAA Tournament and served Kentucky really well and a bunch of draft picks, guys that had good careers in the league.
“So, to have those former players back is really special and we’re incredibly excited to take full advantage of that.”
La Familia is the No. 2 seed in the Lexington Region of the $1 million event and will face off against the 305 Racers in the first round on July 19 at 8:00 pm on FS2.
While most of the group has played together in some capacity in the past, having the opportunity to face off against another group of players will certainly be valuable as they head into the tournament.
Conversely, with twelve players who haven’t played together outside of their two weeks on school, Kentucky will have an opportunity to test its team dynamic.
After a very trying few months, Mark Pope has done an incredible job winning back the former players and the rest of the fan base.
In a new chapter of Kentucky basketball history, this is another opportunity to get former players back on campus and in the facilities before his first season.
“One of the great things for us is that former players are allowed to be on the court with our current players,” Pope continued. “These guys are preparing for a tournament where they have a chance to represent Kentucky and themselves in a brilliant way and we’re trying to prepare for a huge season and so we’re going to try to do that together a little bit.”
