This offseason has seen Denver Broncos cornerback Patrick Surtain embroiled in contract talks with the organization.

Given that the two sides have yet to come to terms on a new deal, Surtain has even been the subject of persistent trade speculation throughout the offseason.

However, as the Broncos approach the end of the voluntary offseason program, Surtain broke his silence on the state of his contract talks with the organization.

“That time will come,” Surtain said, via Ryan McFadden of the Denver Post. “I’m focused on being the best player I can be.”
Surtain remains one of the premier cornerbacks in the sport, and is merely entering the prime of his career on the heels of a career-high 69 total tackles with an interception last season.
During a stellar 2023 campaign, Pro Football Focus points out that Surtain held opposing quarterbacks to a passer rating of just 93.9 when targeting him, while receivers averaged fewer than 13 yards per reception against him

Given that cornerback remains a premium position and Surtain is one of the premier players at the position, the Broncos may be wise to find a way to get a deal done sooner rather than later.

Sean Payton confirms Courtland Sutton situation is contract related

Denver Broncos wide receiver Courtland Sutton hasn’t been with the team at OTAs the last few weeks.

However, these are voluntary practices, so it’s Sutton right to sit out.

Sutton caught 10 touchdowns in 2023, which was tied for fourth in the NFL. He allegedly thinks it warrants a raise from the $13.6 million he’s set to make this upcoming season, hence why he’s not in town.

Things become interesting next week, since the Broncos are having minicamp June 11-13. It is indeed mandatory, therefore Sutton will get penalized if he’s not at Broncos Park Powered by CommonSpirit. Head coach Sean Payton expects Sutton to be present.

Speaking to reporters following Tuesday’s OTA, Payton confirmed that, while also admitting it’s a contract matter with Sutton.

“Yeah, I think he’ll be here for minicamp. It’s mandatory,” Payton said. “I think that’ll work itself out. I think he’ll be here, yeah, but I don’t know that for sure.”

When a follow up was asked about if Sutton wants a pay boost, Payton had jokes.

“Well, it’s not that he doesn’t like our new uniforms,” Payton remarked.

Meanwhile, last week, Sutton stated it’s a desire of his to walk into Denver’s Ring of Fame one day, when he was not with the team. Sutton could’ve be creating chemistry with the two new QBs in Bo Nix and Zach Wilson.

Finding a rapport with those men would enhance his case down the road for the Broncos most elite accolade. Instead, he worked out thousands of kilometers away.

We’ll see whether it changes next week with his arrival. It’s something the head coach anticipates to happen, but couldn’t 100 percent confirm Courtland Sutton will be back with his teammates.
