JJ McCarthy declined a call from 1 sports legend after being drafted
JJ McCarthy’s first meeting with the Minnesota media forced him to decline a call he would have probably preferred to take.
The new Vikings quarterback met virtually with the media on Saturday for the first time, but had to decline a call in the middle of his availability. That call was from none other than Wayne Gretzky, which McCarthy noted.
That’s Wayne Gretzky, whoa. McCarthy apologized for that and hung up the phone. “I’m going to the hockey state and playing hockey guy one-on-one.”
McCarthy knew the significance of the call because he played hockey in addition to football growing up. The quarterback revealed that shortly after McCarthy and the Michigan Wolverines won the national championship in January, his marketing representative made the connection between Gretzky and himself.
I’m sure Gretzky will understand McCarthy’s decision to postpone their post-draft conversation. The young quarterback, at least, knows what’s important when it comes to his media duties. At the very least, it probably surpasses the Jacksonville Jaguars’ encounter with Trevor Lawrence..
