Brad Holmes on not taking an “all-in” approach: We are seeking sustained success
The Lions came as close to the Super Bowl in 2023 as they ever have. Detroit, which blew a big lead to the 49ers in the NFC Championship Game, is among the 12 teams never to win a Super Bowl.
Lions General Manager Brad Holmes doesn’t want to hear about a Super Bowl “window.”
They want to have sustained success as the Patriots did and the Chiefs are doing, rather than going “all-in” for one championship as the 2021 Rams did.
“You’re like, ‘OK, all right, the roster’s at a certain stage, so I get your question. Alright, so you guys need to be favorites going into the season. Tell me, how do you guys do this? According to Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press, Holmes stated. However, I simply believe that if we simply carry out our process and keep getting better every year, that’s what we’ve been doing and what we’ll keep doing. And that’s when I believe you start to kind of get into trouble—when you start thinking, “Well, we have this window, so we have this and we have to pivot.”
The Lions have developed through the draft, and among the indigenous talent are offensive lineman Penei Sewell, tight end Sam LaPorta, running back Jahmyr Gibbs, edge rusher Aidan Hutchinson, defensive tackle Alim McNeill, and Kerby Joseph.
The Lions acquired quarterback Jared Goff from the Rams in a trade in 2021. This summer, the team also added offensive center Kevin Zeitler, defensive tackle D.J. Reader, and defensive back Carlton Davis.
Holmes stated it’s critical the team “stick to the same process” because they possess the 29th pick in the draft that takes place next week. He acknowledged that the Lions might trade out of the first round and quipped that he hoped supporters would overlook this.
