‘Loved and adored’ Springboks captain Siya Kolisi named on 100 most influential list
Double Rugby World Cup-winning Springboks captain Siya Kolisi has been named in TIME Magazine’s list of the 100 most influential people of 2024.
Kolisi features on the list after captaining South Africa to Rugby World Cup glory in France last year defeating New Zealand 11-12 in the final.
The 32-year-old is named among the “Innovators” on Time’s 100 list, which serves to highlight the world’s most influential people each year.
“Embodiment of hope”
After All Blacks great Richie McCaw, he is only the second player to captain his side to back-to-back World Cup wins. His inclusion only solidifies his legendary reputation.
Time stated in their justification for choosing their list, “These are the people who we believe most changed the stories that define the past year.”
Having led South Africa in a Test match against England in 2017, Kolisi became the first black player to do so. Since then, he has made 83 appearances for the Springboks, including 53 as captain.
“He’s been the embodiment of hope during a time in which many South Africans find it hard to hold on to any. Through political strife, an energy crisis, and the effects of COVID-19, Siya has made rugby into something more more than just a match. The nation’s triumphs, including his several wins, have meant a great deal, South African comedian Trevor Noah stated in the Time list.
Siya has taught us what a strong captain ought to be—someone who inspires and serves others under his direction—through his insight and humility. It is also a tremendous accomplishment for him to be loved and admired by supporters of all races while leading a team in a traditionally white sport.
In addition to being a devoted father, a devoted spouse, and a wonderful friend, Siya is an unwavering warrior on the field. To this 62 million-person nation, he has given so much. I hope he has been relishing every second of his achievement.
Captaincy doubts
The Time list also includes sports stars like Patrick Mahomes, Max Verstappen, Jenni Hermoso, and A’ja Wilson.
Following the Rugby World Cup in France, Kolisi made the move to Top 14 club Racing 92 has raised doubts around his future as the captain of the Springboks.
Head coach Rassie Erasmus has explained that he prefers that his captain be locally based but is open to making an exception for the inspirational leader.
