£75m Newcastle duo at risk of two-game suspension heading into Fulham test

Two Newcastle United players will have to be extremely careful as they traverse the Magpies next fixture away against Fulham

Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon must be on their best behaviour when Newcastle United play Fulham at Craven Cottage this afternoon, or they risk the wrath of a two-game suspension each.

Eddie Howe’s men travel to the capital firmly in the hunt for European qualification. They sit eighth in the Premier League standings with 44 points – just four shy of Manchester United in sixth.

It means the players will be fighting tooth and nail whilst there is still an opportunity to qualify for UEFA competition, continuing with today’s meeting with Marco Silva’s side. However, Guimaraes and Gordon must heed to the warning of their manager so as to not damage the club’s chances later down the line.Guimaraes sits on nine bookings and has done so since January 13 against Manchester City. Depending on the match he would be shown a 10th, he could miss two of three upcoming matches against Tottenham Hotspur, Crystal Palace and Sheffield United – though there is an interesting loophole.

If the Brazilian is shown a second yellow card in the same match he receives his 10th of the season, he would serve a one-game ban as it is a red card sending off rather than for the accumulation of yellows. When asked about it Howe stated: “I don’t know what to say to that.”

As for Gordon, he has just returned from a one-game suspension for his sending off against West Ham last weekend. He is on eight yellow cards, so would need to be penalised against both Fulham and Spurs to ensure that he would sit out of the following Palace and Sheffield United fixture.
