White Sox announce unexpected Opening Day starter to face Tigers on March 28

The Chicago White Sox have announced their Opening Day starter — and it’s a bit of a surprise.
Left-hander Garrett Crochet will be making his first career start when he faces the Detroit Tigers on March 28 at Guaranteed Rate Field in Chicago.
Crochet will face Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal, who was announced as the Opening Day starter earlier this month.

The announcement by the White Sox comes five days after they traded ace right-hander Dylan Cease to the San Diego Padres for four prospects.
The Tigers shed no tears over the move. In 15 career starts against Detroit, Cease is 10-1 with a 2.07 ERA, striking out 102 in 82 2/3 innings.
Crochet, 24, was drafted by the White Sox in the first round (11th overall) out of the University of Tennessee in 2020. He made his debut that summer in the COVID-shortened season and was an effective reliever for the Sox in 2021. Crochet underwent Tommy John surgery in April 2022 and battled shoulder problems in 2023.
Crochet is tough on left-handed hitters, which could present manager A.J. Hinch with some interesting decisions regarding his Opening Day lineup.
Two of the following three left-handers — second baseman Colt Keith, center fielder Parker Meadows and designated hitter Kerry Carpenter — could be on the bench on March 28, giving way to right-handed hitters Andy Ibanez and Matt Vierling.
