Jaquan Brisker striving to top Matt Eberflus’ 21-tackle performance in college

Last Sunday after Jaquan Brisker had become the first Bears defensive back to record at least 17 tackles in a game since at least 1970, head coach Matt Eberflus marveled at the feat.

“It’s unbelievable to get 17 tackles; that’s unheard of,” Eberflus said. “Sounds like my college stats, for crying out loud.”

That comment elicited laughter from reporters gathered in the press conference room, but it was no joke: Eberflus once registered 21 tackles while playing linebacker for the University of Toledo in a game against Northern Illinois in 1991.

Eberflus arrived at Toledo as a walk-on and developed into a first-team All-MAC performer as a junior and senior who was named team MVP as a senior.

During his time with the Rockets, Eberflus racked up 325 tackles, including a team-high 89 tackles as a junior and 138 tackles as a senior.

His coach’s 21-tackle performance in college gives Brisker something to shoot for.

“That’s my next goal,” Brisker said, “to beat Flus, for sure.”
