Former Bayern Munich star Lothar Matthaus has criticised the club for their recent transfer strategy following the signing of Eric Dier from Tottenham Hotspur, and the reported move for former Spurs man, Kieran Tripper.

This month, Bayern Munich made the unexpected decision to sign Eric Dier on a six-month loan from Spurs, with the possibility of a permanent transfer (ESPN).

This resulted from the German powerhouses losing out to Tottenham in the competition to recruit Radu Dragusin from Genoa, who was their primary target for the center-back position.

The Bundesliga winners are now making headway in their attempt to sign Kieran Trippier as well, hoping to address their defensive problems at right back (The Guardian).

Lothar Matthaus is not happy with Bayern Munich

These two transfers have been called out by Matthaus, who is not happy with the perceived lack of ambition his former club is showing in the transfer market right now.

He told Sky Sports: “Eric Dier wasn’t necessarily a key player at Tottenham recently. I remember Uli Hoeness once saying that, ‘We won’t be bringing in any more players who are sitting on the bench at other clubs’. The latest transfer looks different. Kieran Trippier would be a similar case.

“That’s not Bayern Munich for me. Bayern should focus on reinforcements or on the young players. Aleksander Pavlovic sat out against Bremen and wasn’t substituted. When he did play, he was always outstanding.

“Bayern Munich have very good youth players and Christoph Freund is responsible for that. He has a good network. In the summer it was said, ‘We can let Benjamin Pavard and Josip Stanisic go and get someone else instead’, and then they didn’t get anyone else.

“As a result, they’ve got problems at right-back and in the centre. They thought, ‘We’ll manage that’. No, they

responded after the fact. The group is unable to identify. Xabi Alonso had his squad together from the beginning in the summer and was able to train how he wanted for six weeks, which was different from Leverkusen.

It may seem odd that a team of Bayern’s caliber would look to add players who are nearing the end of their careers as short-term fixes to improve their roster. Who knows? Maybe Harry Kane is just hoping to see his friends there.

Two of Tottenham’s Argentines have been answering questions from the fans and giving their opinions on matters within the club

Giovani Lo Celso believes that Cristian Romero is the best player at Tottenham Hotspur as the centre-back himself admits he still has a lot to learn as a leader.

Both Argentines are looking to thrive this season under Ange Postecoglou, with Romero handed the role as one of Tottenham’s vice-captains. In a segment for the club’s YouTube channel the duo answered questions from some of the club’s fans and Lo Celso was asked who he thought was the best player at Spurs.

“For me it’s Cristian Romero. I’ve said it since the day he arrived and I’ll keep saying it. I was surprised from the first day, first in the national team and then here at the club,” said the 27-year-old of the World Cup winner. “The way he integrated and his performance here at the club is still surprising. He deserves everything he has got up to here and everything he will get.”

The pair of Argentines are following in the footsteps of some famous compatriots, including the trailblazing Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa who arrived at Tottenham after winning the 1978 World Cup. Maradona has also worn the Spurs colours, playing for the club in Ardiles’ testimonial against Inter Milan at a packed White Hart Lane in 1986. The legendary Argentine also visited Wembley to watch Tottenham demolish Liverpool in 2017 in the Premier League.

Lo Celso wants the current Argentines at the club to repeat the success of their predecessors in the years ahead.

“I think that with Ardiles and Villa, the club has very good memories and the obviously what happened with

Maradona, the game he played, and this is where they still felt a strong sense of identification. The midfielder continued, “They also kept those wonderful memories when he visited the club.”

“And then, as the three Argentineans here, Alejo [Veliz] and I aspire to follow in the footsteps of the past players who have visited us recently and try to write our names in the club’s history one day. While we are working toward it, I sincerely hope it happens.”

Romero quickly poked fun at a few of his teammates as he answered the question of who had the worse music in the locker room.

“Bissouma’s is terrible. Maddison, Emerson, terrible. They have very different tastes,” he said. “Surely they think the same about us, but I’ll name those three because they put bad music on in the dressing room. Each song

more detrimental than the previous one. My preference is to listen to my own music while wearing headphones.”

One of the players’ favorite moments with captain Son Heung-min was the subject of another question, which was answered by Lo Celso.

“For me, an image and a memory that always comes to mind was when we played in the Champions League as visitors and I scored my first goal,” he stated. “After the party, I seem to have taken a picture with Sonny. That was, in my opinion, a really wonderful occasion for me, and Sonny and I have had many wonderful times together. He’s a terrific guy in addition to being a fantastic player.
