After last weekend’s Steelers playoff wild-card round loss to the Bills, DT Cameron Heyward seems unsure about his football future. Since then, he has decided whether to run it back in 2024 or retire.
“I’m not going to retire. On his podcast, “Not Just Football with Cam Heyward,” Heyward declared, “I hate to be blunt about it, but I’m not retiring.” “I want to get well physically. I could hardly run after the season since I played the entire thing on one lousy leg.”
That’s music to the ears of Steelers fans after the soon-to-be 35-year-old seemed tired following last weekend’s loss.
“It’s been a rough season. In my heart, I want to play but it’s been rough,” Heyward told reporters. “I need to take the offseason to get healthy again.”
The six-time Pro Bowler’s 2023 season is likely not what he imagined, suffering a groin injury in Week 1 that landed him on injured reserve for eight weeks. But he was able to return and get a small taste of the playoffs once again, which is what keeps him coming back.
In his thirteen years in the NFL, Heyward has only one postseason victory, but he appears certain that Pittsburgh will be a contender the next year.
“I think the group here, collectively, is a strong group that can win a Super Bowl,” Heyward stated. “I’m really desirous of that. Not having the chance to win a Super Bowl is what bothers me the most at night.”
The veteran’s contract expires in one year. His career may come to an end in 2024, particularly if the Steelers surprise everyone and challenge for a championship.
Heyward is prepared to put in his best effort once more. Naturally, after he recovers from his illness.
