‘Mega, mega money’… Tottenham would now have to break club-record to sign 19-goal striker

Journalist Mike McGrath has shared what he has been told about the price it will take to sign Santiago Gimenez with Tottenham Hotspur very interested in the striker.

Santiago Gimenez has been one of the most impressive forwards in Europe this season. The Mexico international has scored 19 goals in 17 Eredivisie games this term.

Unsurprisingly, he is attracting a lot of interest. Tottenham are very keen on Gimenez. But it is hard to see Spurs making a big-money move for a striker in the January transfer window, having already welcomed two signings, including Timo Werner, who can play across the forward line.

Tottenham need club-record amount to sign Santiago Gimenez

Certainly, Gimenez will be one name to keep an eye on heading into the summer.

But speaking on the Last Word on Spurs podcast, McGrath suggested that Tottenham are going to have to be prepared to break their club-record to sign the 22-year-old, with Feyenoord looking for at least £69 million.

“We’ve reported at the Telegraph, there’s Gimenez at Feyenoord. Many, many other clubs have watched him and people are seeing what kind of price Feyenoord are going to ask for for him. You’re hearing mega, mega money that it’s going to take, €80m plus. He’s highly regarded,” he said.

Spurs may be wary after previous striker deal

Of course, the concern for Tottenham will be whether Gimenez is able to be as prolific in the Premier League. He

has undoubtedly been exceptional, but several players have had difficulty maintaining that level of play outside of the Eredivisie.

Spurs players are more aware of this than most. After a season in which he scored 27 goals in the Dutch top division, Vincent Janssen came. However, he only made 27 league games for Tottenham prior to leaving.

It’s true that Janssen would likely have an easier time now that Harry Kane isn’t playing for the team. Still, he found it difficult to seize his chances when they presented themselves.

Gimenez’s asking price will not deter someone from taking a chance on him. And many Tottenham supporters will be wishing that they are the ones to take a chance.
