Fabrizio Romano says player Tottenham sold for £28m last year could soon make Premier League return
Fabrizio Romano has claimed that Steven Bergwjin, who was on Tottenham Hotspur’s books until last year, is now on the radar of Premier League clubs.
The transfer insider, writing on CaughtOffside, says the one-time Spurs winger is courting “interest from clubs in England and Saudi” Arabia.
Tottenham signed Bergwijn from PSV Eindhoven in January 2020, and the Dutchman hit the ground running at Spurs.
In February, Bergwijn scored a stunning volley on his debut to help Tottenham record a 2-0 win over Manchester City.
Two years later, the Netherlands international came off the bench to score two goals deep into injury time to help Spurs come back to beat Leicester 3-2.
‘He’s a very good player’
These standout moments aside, Bergwijn wasn’t able to make much of an impact at Tottenham as he slipped down the pecking order under Antonio Conte.
Spurs transferred him to Ajax in the summer of 2022 for an estimated £28 million. Since then, he has made 58 appearances, scored 22 goals, and provided eight assists.
Furthermore, Bergwijn appears to be interested in returning to the Premier League this winter, according to Romano.
“I can’t name names right now, but there’s interest from clubs in Saudi Arabia and England, so there might be a chance for Steven Bergwijn to leave Ajax in January,” he tweeted.
“Ajax has not yet provided an indication regarding his cost; he is still a key member of their team. He’s a very talented player, in my opinion; he simply needs to play the right position.
Bergwijn showed flashes of quality at Tottenham
Bergwijn was a player who Tottenham was right to try their luck with, and in his time there, he showed flashes of brilliance.
Unfortunately, it didn’t work out for him in the end. However, one can’t help but wonder how things may have turned out if the league hadn’t been stopped in March 2020 and how he would have performed if Ange Postecoglou had taken over as manager instead of the previous one.
It appears likely that Tottenham supporters may witness him back in the Premier League as early as the next year.
