Ex-Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger backs Tottenham to challenge for title due to three factors
Tottenham extended their lead at the top of the Premier League table by beating Crystal Palace on Friday night and Arsene Wenger considers them genuine title hopefuls
Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has put rivalries to one side to admit he considers Tottenham to be
thanks to two summer additions and Son Heung-min’s redeployment, among four teams vying for the Premier League championship.
Spurs, who lost their top scorer from the previous campaign, Harry Kane, in August, are currently atop the standings after winning their first ten games of the current campaign. They defeated Crystal Palace 2-1 at Selhurst Park in their most recent match, with new captain Son Heung-min scoring his eighth league goal of the year.
Wenger listed several things about Ange Postecoglou’s team that have impressed him, including Son’s transition into the middle. Furthermore, even though the Frenchman thinks his former team, Arsenal, is in the
title race, he believes their neighbors are conversing as well.
“I prefer to express my emotions honestly,” Wenger stated on beIN Sports. “In my heart, I think Tottenham will be a strong contender for the league.
“They purchased Maddison, a fantastic player. He is the player who transitions from low to high midfield and gives the team some technical inventiveness.
“They purchased Van de Ven, who is, in my opinion, very remarkable. They were vulnerable there, and Lloris didn’t have the best season the previous season either [Hugo]. Additionally, the transition from Son into the center appears excellent.”
The hosts, Richard Keys and Andy Gray, then questioned Wenger about his sincerity in regards to Spurs being title contenders as opposed to just top four contenders. And the seventy-four-year-old increased his wagers instead of hedging them.
“For the Premier League, I would say Arsenal for me, Liverpool, Tottenham, [Manchester] City of course will always come back,” he stated. “They look like the four… at the moment for the Premier League.”
The last time out, Spurs didn’t have everything going their way against Palace. Joel Ward’s own goal put Postecoglou’s team ahead after a goalless first half, and Son added another before home forward Jordan Ayew pulled one back late on.
