Who else was there to take over, was my argument? Who else could do a better job than Ange Postecoglou at Tottenham Hotspur?

This was after Spurs were insipid in defeat to Ipswich Town at the beginning of November. There was a groundswell of calls on social media for the Australian to be sacked after such a lifeless display.

On that day Spurs could have risen as high as third in the table with a win at home against the tractor Boys. Instead, a 2-1 defeat sent them 10th in the table.

Since that day in November, Tottenham have won just twice in the Premier League – against Southampton and Manchester City – in 11 matches. That is unacceptable.

Spurs sit 15th in the Premier League table following a 3-2 defeat at the hands of Everton and are closer to the relegation zone than the top half of the table. That is outrageous.

I’m not one of these fans that thinks we have a divine right to be at the Premier League’s top table, you have to earn it. We’re certainly not deserving right now. But if you look at the stature of the club, the money we’ve spent and the players we’ve got, there’s a certain expectation for a club like Tottenham. These days at least.

The infrastructure is in place, everything is there to succeed – yes I am aware there are plenty of questions to aim at Daniel Levy and the board too. But Spurs are not. And have not, for far too long.

Yes, Postecoglou has extenuating circumstances going heavily against him. An almost entirely different backline to the one he would choose were everyone available is never going to help matters, but in the midfield and attack he has an abundance of talent, albeit having to deal with injuries in those areas too.

When you do not have the players to play your way, you have to change. Postecoglou did change on Sunday, reverting to a back three but it was a disaster. I’m not sure what the thinking was, but it allowed Everton, a team bereft of confidence to get at Spurs and open up a 3-0 lead. To be honest, it could and should have been more.

There are other ways of playing, but he just will not relent and it will, eventually, be his undoing. I still don’t know who could walk in and do the job, but I’ve changed my mind. It’s got to the stage now where I do not enjoy watching Spurs (again).

I felt, before kick-off, that I would prefer to go to the pub and have a few beers, rather than watch the Tottenham game. I was proved right. And as a supporter, a staunch supporter of 30-plus years, that makes me very sad.
