‘We had clear objectives’ – Postecoglou reviews Tottenham’s transfer window

The January transfer window is now closed, and it has been a fairly successful month for Tottenham by all accounts. With players coming in, and lots of fringe players heading out the door, Ange Postecoglou has told the press he is happy with the business, but revealed he just has one minor disappointment from the window.

Spurs started the month with a couple of early acquisitions, with Timo Werner joining on loan until the end of the season, and Radu Dragusin arriving from Genoa after a battle with Bayern Munich for his signature.

The two have immediately increased the depth of Ange Postecoglou’s squad, with Werner having a particularly noticeable effect since he has started every game for the Lilywhites (Transfermarkt) and already has three assists.

Then, on the day of the deadline, Spurs seem to have made a wise financial decision by signing 18-year-old Swedish sensation Lucas Bergvall, defeating Barcelona to complete the acquisition.

In the meantime, this month has seen the departure of players like Hugo Lloris, Eric Dier, Ivan Perisic, Djed Spence, Sergio Reguilon, and Japhet Tanganga from the team.

How does Postecoglou feel about the transfer window?

So, is Postecoglou happy? Well, sort of. In his latest press conference (via Football.London), the Spurs boss revealed his one regret from the transfer window.

“The only disappointing one for us was that I felt there was a good opportunity for us, but the club didn’t feel it was right and he ended up going elsewhere. He went to Ferrari instead,” Postecoglou joked, in reference to Lewis Hamilton’s move in the Formula 1 world.

“I got you all going there didn’t I? I felt you needed something after a bit of a flat day yesterday,” he added.

Then, taking a more serious approach, Postecoglou continued: “We had clear objectives. We had a gap at centre-back after letting Davinson Sanchez go and getting Radu in was great. Getting Timo early also excellent. We’ve had injuries with Sonny away, and already he’s made a contribution.

“If we left it to the last day it takes time to settle. Both have settled well. With outgoings, we got some good loans.. With Alejo Veliz it’s great for him to get game time at a good club. Also players like Ashley Phillips and Alfie Devine got good loans.”

To be honest, I believe that this window has been fantastic. The players we have added are just what we needed, and getting rid of some of the surplus has been a tremendous plus. With our recent stellar recruiting, I’m eager to see what we do in the summer.
