Michigan quarterback J.J. McCarthy hasn’t made a decision about his future, whether that’s to stay with the Wolverines or declare for the NFL draft, but in case he is done at Michigan, he wanted to go out in style.
After defeating Washington 34–13 on Monday to win the national championship, the Wolverines celebrated with a championship parade and celebration on Saturday.
McCarthy accepted the 2023 Coaches’ Trophy, a $30,000 Waterford crystal sculpture. He made the decision to pass it along to defensive back Mike Sainristil, a teammate. Fortunately, Salvador was prepared for the catch and he moved to the stand to securely place the football-shaped prize on it.
McCarthy’s audacious throw caused the crowd to gasp together, but when the award landed safely, the audience laughed. If McCarthy decides to leave the program, this will be a very costly last-ditch effort at Michigan.
McCarthy’s pass was compared by some fans to the legendary Lombardi Trophy pass made by former Michigan quarterback Tom Brady during the Super Bowl LV Buccaneers boat celebration. He tossed the valuable trophy from one vessel to the next.
Following the national championship, supporters greeted McCarthy with chants of “one more year” as he returned to Ann Arbor. The junior has until Monday to decide whether or not to sign the NFL drama.
