‘I’m surprised’ – Pundit hopes his old club don’t sell player to Tottenham

Chelsea legend Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has urged his former club not to sell Conor Gallagher to Tottenham, insisting that the Blues cannot afford to lose the midfielder.

It has been widely reported by many outlets across the British media that Chelsea are open to

giving up Gallagher to raise enough money to be able to go after their January goals (The Athletic).

Tottenham is said to be prepared to jump on the 23-year-old as soon as the transfer window opens, suggesting that the news has caught their attention (talkSPORT).

Many people were surprised by the Blues’ readiness to let go of Gallagher, an England international who is still a mainstay in Mauricio Pochettino’s midfield.

Some have criticized the West London club’s management for supposedly being eager to sell the player against Pochettino’s preferences (talkSPORT).

Should Gallagher swap Chelsea for Tottenham?

Hasselbaink has become the latest pundit to try and persuade Chelsea against the idea of selling Gallagher, with the 51-year-old insisting that the midfielder’s attributes as a player and his leadership qualities make him a valuable asset for the side.

The Dutchman told Amazon Prime Sport (7:08 pm, 27 December): “They need the know-how and that’s what he (Gallagher) gives you. He’s one of the seniors in the team. He’s the captain as well. He’s come through the ranks.

The idea that they might let him go surprises me.

“I hope they don’t sell him because he provides you with the equilibrium you currently lack. Granted that he still has 18 months left on his contract, I believe Chelsea needs Gallagher to stay for the time being.

It is hardly unexpected that Chelsea supporters are incensed by the Gallagher announcement. They would find the prospect of selling him to Tottenham especially repugnant.

But, given their FFP predicament, the West London team must sell some assets if they are to make any new acquisitions, and Spurs will want to fully capitalize on this.
