Andre Villas-Boas says he had ‘massive arguments’ at Tottenham when Spurs refused to sign ‘brilliant’ player

Andre Villas-Boas has revealed that he wanted to sign Joao Moutinho for Tottenham Hotspur, but his wish was not granted.

Andre Villas-Boas was given quite a lot of money to spend during his time at Tottenham.

Spurs sold Gareth Bale to Real Madrid after the Portuguese boss’ first season at the club, and they used that money to bring in a bunch of players.

In 2013, the club bought Roberto Soldado, Erik Lamela, Paulinho, and Christian Eriksen. A year prior, Villas-boas recruited players like Hugo Lloris, Jan Vertonghen, and Mousa Dembele.

The 46-year-old has since disclosed that he had’massive disputes’ with the Spurs recruiting staff because they denied his proposal to sign Joao Moutinho instead of Dembele.

“I wanted to sign Joao Moutinho and he was sitting sixth on the list compiled by data people,” Villas-Boas stated at the Web Summit in Lisbon, as reported by TeamTalk. [Moussa] Dembele was first on the list, and we signed him.

“It drained me emotionally to the point where, here was a guy that the data was not showing all that he

shown from the viewpoint of the coach, who is a player who is aware of your leadership, your style, and their capacity to adjust to it.

This can be measured, but it has to be done from a coach’s perspective, not just one viewpoint. This was the issue at first, and as a result, Moutinho and I got into some really big disputes early on.

We were planning to assemble a really potent midfield, so it was a shame that we lost out on Moutinho when we got Dembele. This is the exact moment when you need to strike a balance in order to determine your coaching philosophy and how to incorporate it into the material that has been given to you.

Moutinho would’ve been great at Spurs

Joao Moutinho was a fantastic player all along.

The Portugal international moved to France to join Monaco after establishing a tremendous reputation for himself at Porto. After that, he played for Wolves for five years, at which time Charlie Nicholas of Sky Sports called him “brilliant.”

In addition to winning league championships in France and Portugal, Moutinho assisted his nation in winning the Nations League in 2019 and the Euros in 2016. He was also outstanding for Wolves in the Premier League.

He’s had a good career, and we really believe that if he had joined Tottenham all those years ago, he would have been an enormous success.
